Portuguese B (SL/HL)
Cultivating Fluency, Cultural Competence, and Exam Precision
IB Portuguese B is a language acquisition course designed for students with some previous experience in the language. At CHAPTR House of Education, our tutors bridge the gap between basic communication and the high-level fluency required by the IB. We focus on strengthening the four core skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—through the lens of the Lusophone world.
The Five IB Themes
Our tutoring sessions are structured around the five prescribed IB themes, ensuring students develop the specific vocabulary and cultural context needed for Paper 1 and Paper 2:
- Identities: Personal relationships, health, and cultural expression.
- Experiences: Travel, leisure, and life stories across Brazil, Portugal, and Africa.
- Human Ingenuity: Innovation, technology, and artistic expression.
- Social Organization: Education, the working world, and community.
- Sharing the Planet: Environment, human rights, and globalization.
The HL Literary Component: In addition to these themes, our tutors assist Higher Level (HL) students in analyzing two literary works, helping them move beyond simple plot summaries to nuanced thematic interpretation.
Overcoming the Challenges of Language B
Language B is more than just "learning words"; it is about communicative intent. Our tutors help students navigate the most difficult aspects of the course:
- The "Register" Challenge: Learning when to use tu vs. você and how to adjust tone between a formal letter and a casual blog post.
- The Text-Type Framework: Mastery of the various formats required for Paper 1 (e.g., artigo, e-mail, folheto, redação).
- Aural Comprehension: Deciphering authentic Brazilian and European accents at natural speaking speeds.
- The Subjunctive Bridge: Moving from simple present/past tenses to the complex moods required for "7-range" grammatical marks.

- Spontaneous Conversation: We create a safe, immersive environment to build the confidence needed for the Individual Oral (IO).
- Writing Workshops: We provide line-by-line feedback on essays, focusing on "Criterion B" (Language) and "Criterion C" (Conceptual Understanding).
- Authentic Pronunciation: Coaching students on the melodic differences between the Portuguese of Lisbon, Maputo, Luanda São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
